“I don’t expect you to say anything,” Miranda replied, her voice steady again, though Andrea could still hear that subtle thread of urgency woven through it. “I expect you to come back. We can discuss what happened—properly.”
“I told you to stay away because it was for your own good,” Miranda cut her off, her voice rising slightly, a flash of anger breaking through her composure. She froze, her breath catching in her throat. “What?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “You’re firing me?” Miranda’s eyes flashed with something close to panic, but she quickly masked it, her expression hardening. “No,” she said sharply, her voice tense. “I’m not firing you. You’re taking a new position, like I’ve repeatedly told you it’s time for.” Andrea’s mind spun, the words barely registering. “A new position?” she repeated, her voice hollow. “But I—” “You’re better than this,” Miranda interrupted, her voice rising again, her control slipping even further. “You’ve been better than this for a long time. You’ve outgrown being my assistant. It’s time for you to step out of this role and move forward with your career.” Andrea stared at her, stunned. She had known this conversation would come eventually, but not like this. Not after what had just happened. Not after everything that had been left unsaid. “And what about… everything else?” Andrea’s voice was tight, her heart pounding in her chest. “You know how I feel about you. You…you have to know that I-” Miranda’s jaw tightened, her gaze flicking away for a brief moment before snapping back to Andrea’s. “Yes,” she said, her voice low, almost pained. “I know. I’ve always known.”
